Tank type water heaters are the most popular type of water heater in homes today. They come in many different sizes and fuel sources, with the most common being 40 and 50 gallons, gas or electric.

At Hot Water Solutions, our specialty is water heaters and making sure a cold shower is a choice. We offer installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement of tank type water heaters in North Atlanta areas. Our licensed plumbers have the expertise necessary to solve your water heater’s issues.

How does a tank type water heater work?

A tank type water heater continuously heats water that is stored in an insulated tank. When the hot water tap is turned on, hot water is released from the top of the tank and cold water enters the bottom to keep the tank full. Since water is constantly heated, energy can be wasted even when a hot water tap is not running. This is called standby heat loss and only tankless water heaters can avoid this loss.

What’s included with every new tank type water heater?

  • Haul away the old unit.
  • A new expansion tank. An old one should never be re-used.
  • A new isolation ball valve.
  • Any other miscellaneous items as needed to bring the new water heater up to code.

What size water heater do you need?

Tank type water heaters are sized based on the capacity in gallons. They typically hold between 30 and 80 gallons with the most common sizes used in homes being 40 or 50 gallons. To determine the correct size for your home, you will need to look at the water heater’s first-hour rating (FHR) and the peak hour demand.

The water heater’s FHR is the amount of hot water it can produce in a 1-hour period. This can be found on the water heater’s yellow Energy Guide label. Your peak hour demand is how much hot water your household uses during a busy hour. To calculate peak hour demand, pick an hour of the day that your house uses the hottest water and determine how many activities from the chart will be performed. So, if there will be 2 showers at 20 gallons each, 1 load of clothes in the washer at 14 gallons, and 1 load of dishes in the dishwasher at 3.5 gallons, you will need a water heater with an FHR of at least 57.5

Generally, we replace a current traditional tank water heater with a unit of the same size. If you are running out of hot water regularly, it may be necessary to upgrade to a larger tank. If this is the case, our water heater specialists will perform a capacity test to determine the correct size water heater for your home.
