Why Does My Water Heater Keep Tripping the Breaker?

If your electric water heater trips the breaker once, you may be tempted to reset it and move on. If it trips again, something is wrong.


A circuit breaker is designed to shut off power when it detects an unsafe electrical condition. Resetting it repeatedly without finding the cause doesn’t solve the problem and could allow damaged wiring or components to continue overheating.


When a water heater keeps tripping the breaker, the water heater, its wiring, or the circuit needs to be inspected.


A Heating Element May Be Shorting Out

One of the most common causes is a failed heating element. Electric water heaters normally have an upper and lower element. These elements sit inside the tank and heat the surrounding water. Over time, an element can deteriorate, crack, or short against the metal tank.


A damaged element may still heat intermittently, but it can draw too much current and trip the breaker. The element must be electrically tested to confirm whether it has failed. Replacing the breaker won’t solve the problem if the heating element is the actual cause.

A Thermostat May Be Malfunctioning

The thermostats control when the heating elements turn on and off. Electric water heaters are designed so that the upper and lower elements generally do not heat at the same time. A failed thermostat can interfere with that sequence or keep an element energized longer than it should be.


This can cause overheating, inconsistent water temperature, or a tripped breaker. Because heating elements and thermostats can create similar symptoms, testing is usually necessary before replacing parts.


There Could Be Loose or Damaged Wiring

Electrical connections can loosen or deteriorate over time. A loose connection creates resistance, which produces heat. You may see discoloration, melted insulation, or damage around a wire connection, access panel, junction box, or breaker.


Sometimes there is no obvious damage from the outside.


If you smell something hot or burning, hear buzzing, see smoke, or notice melted wiring, turn the breaker off and leave it off until the system has been inspected.


The Water Heater May Be Leaking

Water and electrical components are never a good combination. A leak from the tank, a plumbing connection, or a component near the access panels can reach the wiring and cause the breaker to trip. Look for moisture around the base of the water heater and near the upper and lower access panels. Don’t remove the panels while the unit is energized, and don’t reset the breaker if water has reached the electrical components.


A leaking tank normally requires replacement. A leak from a connection or replaceable component may be repairable, depending on its source and the condition of the water heater.


The Circuit or Breaker May Be the Problem

Sometimes the problem is outside the water heater. The breaker may be worn or damaged, the circuit may be improperly sized, or the water heater may have been connected to a circuit that wasn’t intended for it.


Electric tank-style water heaters generally require a properly sized dedicated 240-volt circuit. The exact electrical requirements depend on the unit’s wattage and manufacturer specifications.


If the water heater was recently installed, replaced, or rewired and the breaker began tripping afterward, the installation and circuit should both be checked.


Don’t Install a Larger Breaker as a Shortcut

A breaker should be sized to protect the wiring and the equipment connected to it. Installing a higher-amperage breaker without confirming the wire size and equipment requirements can allow the wiring to overheat before the breaker trips. That creates a serious fire risk.


The correct repair is to identify why the existing breaker is tripping, not to make it harder for the breaker to do its job.


Should You Reset the Breaker?

If the breaker has tripped and there are no signs of leaking, burning, or damaged wiring, you can try resetting it once. If it trips again, leave it off.


Repeatedly resetting the breaker won’t repair a failed element, damaged wire, or thermostat. It only sends power back into a circuit that has already indicated a problem.


Is the Water Heater Worth Repairing?

A failed element or thermostat in a newer water heater can often be repaired. The decision becomes less clear when the unit is older or has other signs of deterioration.


We generally look at:

  • The age of the water heater

  • The overall condition of the tank

  • The cause and cost of the repair

  • Whether the tank is leaking or corroded

  • Whether the unit has had other recent problems


A breaker that keeps tripping does not automatically mean you need a new water heater. It does mean the problem needs to be properly diagnosed before the unit is used again.
