Why Is My Hot Water Pressure Low?
You turn on a faucet and the cold water comes out normally, but the hot water flow is noticeably weaker. Maybe it happens at one sink, throughout one bathroom, or everywhere in the house.
Homeowners commonly assume that low hot water pressure means the water heater is failing. Sometimes the restriction is at or near the water heater, but the heater itself is only one of several possible causes. The first step is determining whether the problem affects one fixture, several fixtures, or the entire house.

Is It Low Pressure or Low Flow?
Homeowners usually describe a weak stream from a faucet or shower as low water pressure. Technically, what you’re noticing at the fixture is reduced flow. The home may still have normal incoming water pressure, but a restriction somewhere in the plumbing prevents enough hot water from reaching the fixture. That restriction could be caused by:

Low Hot Water Pressure at One Shower
A weak shower may be caused by the showerhead, cartridge, or valve rather than the water heater. Possible causes include:
A clogged showerhead
Debris inside the valve
A worn pressure balancing cartridge

The cold water supply valve controls the water entering the heater. Because hot water can only leave as cold water enters, a restricted inlet can reduce hot water flow throughout the house. The valve may be:
Partially closed
Corroded
Broken internally
Blocked by debris
An older gate valve that no longer opens completely
A handle that turns doesn’t always mean the valve is operating correctly inside.
Could the Water Heater Connections Be Restricted?
The restriction may be at one of the connections above the water heater. We inspect for:

Sediment is often blamed for almost every water heater problem, but buildup at the bottom of a tank doesn’t usually cause a sudden loss of pressure by itself. Sediment is more commonly associated with:
Reduced hot water capacity
Popping or rumbling noises
Longer heating times
Reduced efficiency
Stress on the tank
However, debris or corrosion can restrict the water heater connections, valves, nipples, or nearby piping. Those restrictions can reduce hot water flow. The location of the buildup matters. Replacing a water heater won’t correct a restriction farther down the hot water line.
Can a Tankless Water Heater Restrict Water Flow?
Tankless water heaters contain smaller internal passages than traditional tanks and have minimum and maximum flow requirements. Low flow through a tankless system may involve:

Could a Mixing Valve Be the Problem?

When Does the Water Heater Need to Be Replaced?
Low hot water pressure alone doesn’t automatically mean the water heater needs replacement. Replacement may be considered when:
The tank itself is leaking
The water heater is severely corroded
Connections can’t be repaired without disturbing a deteriorated tank
The unit is already near or beyond its expected lifespan
Multiple age related problems are occurring
Repair costs no longer make sense
The tankless heat exchanger is damaged or uneconomical to repair
